Why Is My Skin So Oily?

This is one of the common questions asked by people who have extremely oily skin.

Oily skin is a result of overly active sebaceous glands in some individuals. These glands secrete a waxy or oily substance called sebum.

While sebum is vital for keeping your skin protected, healthy, and hydrated, too much of it can lead to oily skin and clogged pores. This may eventually result in acne.

The followings skin care routine can help you manage your oily skin:

Step 01: Cleanse

The first step of any skin care routine is cleansing your skin.

It is very important for those with oily skin to do a complete face wash in the morning, even though you might feel like your skin is still clean from the night wash.

Because, during the night your skin is busy shedding skin cells and producing oils.

“You have to wash your face twice, maximum 3 times with a face wash.

And the face wash for oily skin can be a forming face wash containing salicylic acid and mandelic acid,” says Dr Bindu Sthalekar

This is going to really help clear away excess oil and dead skin to prevent buildup in the pores.

Step 02: Vitamin c serum

Follow that with a Vit. C serum. The vitamin c serum is an antioxidant. It will protect you from the sun rays and also it will be like an anti ageing and an antioxidant which mobs up all your free radicals which are produced when we are exposed to sunlight and pollution.

Step 03: Retinol

And at nighttime, you can use again your face wash, and then follow that with Retinol containing creams.

“If you are over 25, remember ageing starts in the mid 20s or late 20s, so start using Retinol containing creams.

And when you are older, they can be changed to Retinoids containing creams, those are prescription creams and they can be used at night but, if you do sleep in the air-conditioning room or if the weather is cold, then at that time you can have alternate night, you can use Retinol and the other alternate night you can use moisturizing cream,” says Dr Bindu Sthalekar.

Step 04: Don’t skip moisturiser

People have this myth that oily skin do not need moisturizer, but remember a moisturiser hydrates your skin.

It prevents ageing. If oily skin does not use a moisturiser, the oil gland do compensate for that hydration, it over produces oil.

So, use a moisturiser but you have to use a special moisturiser. Remember it has to be NON COMEDOGENIC (that means it will not block your pores).

They have been tested so that they will not cause any blocking of the pores, and cause blackhead and whitehead formation.

Step 05: Exfoliation

“As you grow older, the upper dead cell layer of the skin does not shed so easily.

The oil traps it, the oil pulls it down. So we have to have assisted exfoliation.

So when I’m talking of exfoliation, you need to help it to exfoliate to get that radiant complexion.

Exfoliation can be done maybe three or four times a week in the summer month and in the winter month maybe once or twice a week.

Exfoliation can be done with exfoliating face wash or you can use exfoliating scrubs.
