Condoms are a barrier-type contraceptive method. Made of latex or polyurethane, it prevents sperm from ascending to the uterus, preventing an unplanned pregnancy. It is also effective in protecting against sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) such as AIDS and HPV.

There are two types of condoms: male and female. The male condom is a wrapper, usually made of latex, that covers the penis and retains sperm during intercourse.

The female condom is a polyurethane tube with one end closed and the other open, coupled to two flexible rings.

It is one of the most efficient contraceptive methods, as it has a 90-95% rate of effectiveness in preventing the transmission of STIs and pregnancy. It should be used in all sexual intercourse (genital, oral and anal). It is cheap and accessible to all people, and has no contraindication. You don’t have to plan ahead to use them.

You might hear a condom called a rubber or the barrier method. But, no matter what you call them, condoms have the same purpose.

Rubber condoms appeared soon after Charles Goodyear and Thomas Hancock discovered the vulcanization of rubber in the mid-nineteenth century. Created around 1858, these early rubber condoms only covered the glans of the penis.

They were known in Europe as “American tips.” In 1869, rubber condoms became “full length,” but with a seam down the middle, which made them uncomfortable.

A 2017 study in the journal Nature found a strong association between worsening premature ejaculation and greater penile hypersensitivity. In the study, researchers used a device called a biothesiometer to measure the level of vibrations applied to the penis that participants could tolerate. Results from the study showed that men with premature ejaculation tolerated fewer vibrations than men who did not have this condition.

Treatments And Care

This contraceptive method is suitable for men and women, of any age group.

Female condom:

  • Use the female condom from the beginning of contact between the penis and vagina;
  • Having sex only once with each female condom. Using a female condom more than once does not prevent STIs and pregnancy;
  • Store the female condom in cool, dry places;
  • Never open the female condom with teeth or other objects that could damage it.

To put on the female condom:

1) Check the integrity of the condom;

2) Fold the smaller ring;

3) Insert the smaller ring to the end of the  vagina.

Male condom:

  • Insert the condom from the beginning of contact between the penis and vagina;
  • Remove the condom with the penis still erect, right after ejaculation;
  • Squeeze the end of the condom as it is unrolled to prevent air from remaining inside it. If the semen reservoir is full of air, the condom may burst;
  • Use only water-based lubricants. Vaseline and other petroleum-based lubricants should not be used, as they cause the condom to crack, nullifying its ability to protect against illness and  pregnancy;
  • Have sex only once with each condom. Using condoms more than once does not prevent STIs and pregnancy;
  • Store condoms in cool, dry places;
  • Never open the condom with your teeth or other objects that could damage it.
