Yeast Infection

Candidiasis is an infection that occurs in the vagina, usually caused by the fungus Candida albicans.

It is a very common vaginal infection that has occurred in 75% of women and even 45% of them have had candidiasis more than twice.

Candidiasis is also more likely to appear in women with high levels of stress, who have a poor diet, who have diseases such as diabetes or also due to lack of sleep.

The symptoms of candidiasis usually occur on the labia and vaginal opening, but they can also be transferred to the clitoris in the form of lumps or general swelling. Among the most prominent symptoms are the following:

  • Vaginal burning and itching in the lips of the vulva and the entrance of the vagina.
  • Swelling and lumps in the clitoris caused by burning in the rest of the vulva.
  • Very thick and white vaginal discharge.
  • Pain when urinating and having sex.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the Herpes simplex virus, generally type II (HSV-II).

Genital herpes is a highly contagious disease that can occur in both men (on the penis and anus) and women (vaginal herpes).

The most prominent symptom of genital herpes is the appearance of pimples that over time turn into blisters until they burst.

In the case of women, vaginal herpes pimples or vesicles usually begin on the lips of the vulva and can spread to areas such as the clitoris where lumps appear due to herpes vesicles. Other symptoms of genital herpes can be the following:

  • Fever and headaches.
  • Tiredness and muscle aches.
  • Vesicles or pimples on the male genitalia or in the vaginal area (appearance of lumps on the clitoris).
  • Swelling of the lymph nodes.
  • Pain and burning sensation in the genital or vaginal area.

Vulvar Folliculitis

Folliculitis is a very common bacterial disease among the younger population that infects the hair follicle and consists of the appearance of lumps, usually reddish in color, and sometimes painful, in the vulvar area and on the vaginal lips, although it can also appear in other areas of the female genitalia such as the clitoris.

Vulvar folliculitis is usually caused by shaving the area without care or by using a blade in poor condition or also by the use of depilatory waxes.

Folliculitis, in the case of having a lump on the clitoris, can also be caused by a wound or microcrack in that area due to very intense relationships or a scratch.

Although it usually disappears without any type of treatment, we can prevent folliculitis by wearing less tight clothing, taking more care of our intimate hygiene and being more careful when waxing.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is an irritation of the vaginal skin, and in other areas such as the clitoris, which can be caused by numerous factors such as soaps or bath salts, perfumed toilet paper, detergents for fabrics, sprays for intimate hygiene and tampons among others.

The general symptoms of contact dermatitis are:

  • Itching and burning in the vagina.
  • Redness of the skin.
  • Swelling and scratches.
  • Blisters or small vesicles.
  • Lumps on the labia and/or other areas of the vagina such as lumps on the clitoris

Bartholin’s Cyst

On each side of the vaginal opening, there are glands called Bartholin’s glands with the function of releasing a liquid during intercourse to lubricate the vagina.

Bartholin’s cyst occurs when these glands are blocked and, as a result, cysts or swollen lumps can appear around the vaginal opening (usually it occurs on the lips of the vulva).

Although it is not very common, the Bartholin cyst can also move to the clitoris, forming a kind of internal bulge within this organ.

When the fluid accumulated inside the Bartholin’s cyst becomes infected, an abscess can form, which presents the following symptoms of barolinitis:

  • Intense pain
  • Swelling of the labia (or clitoris).
  • Lump or bump on the clitoris or on the labia that is very sensitive.
  • Pain in the vagina during sexual intercourse.

In this other MyhealthMyskin article we explain how to treat bartholinitis.
